CSA: What is it?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a relationship between a farm and you the consumer. When you become a member of a ‘CSA’, you pay in advance for some of the season’s harvest. In our case, that means that you pay in advance for our amazing products. Doing this allows us, your small family farm, to grow your food without going into extreme debt every spring until harvest time.
As a thank you for investing in our harvest season, you not only are guaranteed to have first dibs on our products, but you also get them at a discounted price.
In short, it is a you help us farm and we help you eat healthy kind of deal.
At ElmValley Farm we have several types of CSA:
1: Our Egg CSA
2: Chicken/Turkey CSA
3: Vegetable CSA ( collaboration with Roots Down Organic Farm). Why? Because we raise animals, but suck in the garden. This is our version of farm to farm csa. We help them, and they help us. I know. Very community supporting of us.( coming spring 2014)
4: Our Meat Buyer’s Club (coming spring 2014)

We currently have about 40 laying hens and a rooster. We have a mixed breed of chickens, laying brown eggs. They live in a comfortable coop behind our house with laying boxes and roosts. Our chickens are pastured, meaning they are let out every morning onto grass to freely scratch the earth and eat as many bugs as they like.
They are NEVER fed any kind of hormone or antibiotic. Their GMO free feed is grown here on the farm, with added ingredients: Organic Kelp from Homestead Organics, Diatomaceous Earth, food grade limestone, oyster shells, soya meal, and peas.
Our chickens get plenty of fresh air, sunlight and grass. Because of this our eggs have a hard shell, are NATURALLY higher in Omega 3 and other nutrients, and taste creamier. The deep orange colour of our eggs indicates the higher chlorophyll and lower cholesterol content. A quick glance at the chart to the right shows the difference in our egg quality.
FYI: The egg yolks are yellow in the winter due to the loss of available fresh grass to munch on. No worries. The chickens are still happy in their coop and have plenty of hay to slurp up all they like.
To grow as much of our own feed as possible. We already grow non GMO corn and are working on substituting soy bean for peas. This would help offset the ever increasing cost of grain. This would allow us to lower our production costs, allowing us to keep our egg prices to a minimum. This year (2014) we will increase our numbers to 80 laying hens. Our goal is to have them out in a movable coop. This will allow the hens to range further into the pasture, thus spreading out the manure, and yet allowing them protection from predators.
